Equine Breeding Services Reproductive services for you and your mare.

Slide Meeting Your Equine's Reproductive Needs Hello valued equine clients! We are so excited for the beginning of the breeding season, and to work with you and your horses. At Rustebakke Veterinary Service, we want the best possible reproductive success for you and your mares.

Slide What To Know We are now requiring a Pre-Breeding Exam for every mare at the beginning of breeding season. Did you know that the rate of pregnancy in a mare after one breeding is only 50% with up to 25% of mares developing persistent breeding-induced endometritis?

Slide Ensuring Effective Reproductive Care We want to minimize those complications, which is why we feel strongly about requiring Pre-Breeding Exams. This will be similar to your first cycle check in previous years. We will use this appointment to develop a game plan with you to increase the breeding success of your mare. This appointment will be 30 minutes long and it will include
  • A one on one consultation with one of our equine veterinarians
  • Rectal ultrasound with examination of both ovaries and the uterus
  • A vaginal and cervical exam
  • Examination of the mare’s external vulvar conformation
  • Review of the mare’s breeding history including any difficulties with breeding or foaling
  • Overall examination of the mare and assessment of her ability to safely carry a foal

Slide Before You Go This is also a great time to make sure vaccines and dewormers are up to date and that any conditions such as Cushings or Insulin Resistance are well managed to maximize fertility. If the stallion you are breeding requires a uterine culture or any other procedures, this is also a good time to begin that process.

Additional Info

We recommend booking these appointments early in the breeding season so if any problems arise, such as retained uterine fluid, we can get on top of them quickly. We will also have you fill out a Pre-Breeding Check In Form to make potential mare boarding drop offs faster and easier for you! We are starting to book Pre-Breeding Exams in February. Give us a call today to schedule an exam for your mare!
